The African Quilt kit I bought from Kim Shaw at the Great Northern Quilt Festival at Harrogate in 2007. The top is done! I used fabric from Scarborough Sewing Centre for the borders and the backing is from there too. It is back on the design wall as I can't decide what sort of wadding to use. I think it will hang on the wall, rather than drape over someone's legs, so maybe my much disliked polyester will be best. I'll mull it over.

On my design wall today....
Out of Africa - fabric and instructions bought from Kim Shaw at the Great Northern Quilt Festival two years ago. As it is so long since I bought this, and I'm going to the quilt show tomorrow, I thought I'd better get it put together. Or there'd be no excuse to buy something else that takes my fancy. I love the fabrics and the piecing isn't too hard - you just need to really concentrate on getting the right piece in the right place and the right way up!
The blocks need squaring up now and then the top shouldn't take too long to put together - if the top's done before I go back to work next week I'll be happy. Quilting and finishing can wait.
The design wall is great - just cotton wadding suspended from the picture rail on two skirt hangers. The blocks cling to the wadding quite firmly and you can swap and change until you're happy with how the quilt looks. When you're done, fold it up and put it away - Great!

Gecko on the Wall Quilt complete

Front, close up of quilting (in the ditch around the wonky squares) and the back.
The Gecko on the Wall quilt is complete - a kit bought from the African Fabric Shop (scroll down to the third kit). I went a bit wrong on the initial cutting - the instructions said to cut two 'wonky' squares containing a gecko as the centrepieces. I went over wonky which meant it took more fabric to piece around the centres and I needed to cut a lot off at the end to square it up. That left nothing for binding and a couple of very narrow borders. Anyhow it's done and it was a nice quick project to do. Another chance to use my newly found binding skills.
